A few days ago, the UK Gambling Commission has announced its plans for the upcoming years and UKGC continue protecting players. The regulator has shared its annual Business Plan and its three-year Corporate Strategy, which are, as always, focused on keeping players away from gambling harm.
The Commission is set out to protect both the players and the UK public from any gambling-related problems and harm, and as explained in its 2021-2022 Business Plan, it will make sure that five key criteria towards making the UK gambling market safer and fairer are met.

The UK Gambling Commission is one of the most dedicated regulators the world of gambling has ever known, continuously fighting against gambling harm and putting efforts into making the UK gambling market the safest and fairer out there. In the latest news, the regulator has unveiled its 2021-2022 Business Plan and its three-year Corporate Strategy, sharing it on the beta version of its new site, expected to be launched soon.
The Commission has set out five goals in its annual Business plan: keeping crime out of gambling, protecting the vulnerable and children from being harmed by gambling, optimizing returns to good causes from the National lottery, keeping a fairer market and more informed consumers and improving gambling regulation.
For the first goal, the regulator plans on persisting in tackling those who offer unlicensed and illegal gambling to UK players, whilst also continuing, to prevent activities that could lead to money laundering, alongside partner agencies. The Commission will also continue working to manage the risks around event manipulation and sports betting integrity.
Protecting minors and vulnerable people from gambling harm has always been a primary priority for the Commission, so it will continue to ensure that operators minimize the risk of gambling harm to the two vulnerable groups, as part of a coordinated effort to understand the factors that influence behaviour. The Commission plans to achieve this through improving competence and conduct, continuing to change the License Conditions and Codes of Practice, focusing on regulatory and preventative action and building a stronger evidence base.
UKGC will also ensure that the effective management of the third license continues, as the National Lottery continues to be one of the largest and most popular, with millions given to good causes each year. The regulator hinted that it would conclude the open and fair competition for the fourth license, ensuring an effective and smooth transition.
A Fairer and Safer Market with UKGC continue protecting players
In attempts to make the UK market even fairer and safer, the Commission would try to make players more informed, by improving and making it simpler for them to find information across the gambling sites they are gambling at. This means it would make operators’ complaints procedures easier to understand and access.
The process of improving gambling regulation never stops; but in its 2021-2022 Business Plan, the Commission sets out the priorities and will focus on improving the way it regulates in parallel with other high-profile decisions to be announced later this year, such as a review of the Commission fees by DCMS and the Government’s Gambling Review. As the Gambling Commission Chair Bill Moyes said, COVID-19 has meant a shift in gambling habits, therefore, making sure the market stays safe is of high priority.
